– Coughs Caused by a Common Cold –

Characteristics of the cough

Occurs throughout the day, with more frequent coughing during the day than at night.

Coughs caused by a common cold are often accompanied by a runny nose, nasal congestion, and fever. Even after other symptoms subside, the cough may persist for another 3–5 days—but there should be no shortness of breath.

Care and management

Generally, no special treatment is required for a cough caused by a common cold.

① For a dry, non-productive cough (no phlegm) in the early stages of a cold, you can simply observe the child for a day or two. The use of cough suppressants is not recommended, and antibiotics are completely ineffective.

② For babies aged 3 months to 1 year, you can offer small amounts of warm water (5–15 ml, up to four times a day). For children over 1 year old, you can offer a small amount of honey (2–5 ml per dose).

Some studies suggest that honey is more effective than cough syrup for treating nighttime coughs; however, honey must *never* be given to infants under 1 year old, due to the risk of botulism.

③ Use a humidifier to increase indoor humidity—be sure to use purified water—and aim to keep the humidity level between 40% and 50%.

④ Adjust the pillow height. For older children, slightly elevating the pillow can make breathing easier. ⑤ If secretions interfere with the baby’s daily life, you may—under a doctor’s guidance—administer oral expectorants (such as ambroxol hydrochloride) or provide nebulizer treatments.

– Allergic Cough –

Characteristics of the Cough

An allergic cough is defined by three main features: episodes of coughing before bedtime, upon waking in the middle of the night, and again upon waking in the morning. This recurring pattern is the hallmark symptom of an allergic cough.
